DR. JOHN F. RINK: CEREC is a restorative technique that whereby crowns, inlays, and onlays can be made in the dental office in one appointment. CEREC is a computerized system that enables the dentist to make crowns using CAD CAM technology on the spot. It is amazing what computers can do now a days in the field of restorative dentistry. I have been using the CEREC system since 1998 and have placed over 6,000 CEREC restorations. I also teach at MUSC to senior dental students the CEREC CAD CAM course. CEREC is a place that now has a firm footing in restorative dentistry and it is an excellent choice for many patients requiring and only wanting and needing a one point dental procedure.
CEREC is a single appointment dental procedure whereby a patient can receive a crown, and inlay, or an onlay at the dental office. The crown is made by a CAD CAM computer system and is, the CAD CAM system is actually in the office. The crown is made from porcelain and is milled by a little diamond mill that is onsite here in the office. CEREC has many applications for patients, in particularly for the patient who really just wants one appointment and in those instances it really shines.
