What is Invisalign?

Invisalign in Charleston is an alternative to traditional orthodontics. Rather than realigning a patient’s teeth with metal brackets, wires, and rubber bands, Invisalign treatment uses a series of clear, removable plastic trays called aligners. Comfortable and discreet, these aligners are worn constantly throughout treatment, gradually shifting a patient’s teeth into the ideal position over a period of 12 to 18 months.

What can I expect from the procedure?

During your Invisalign appointment, Dr. Rink will first take x-rays, photos, and impressions of your teeth and jaw to create a digital, three-dimensional model. With this model, he can plan your treatment in detail, including how long your treatment should take, how many aligners you will require, and how your teeth will ideally look at the end of treatment. Then he will create your aligners, which you will be able to take home with you.

Unlike the metal brackets and wire of traditional braces, the smooth plastic surface of Invisalign aligners are comfortable to wear.

For the treatment to be effective, patients need to wear their aligners for at least 20 to 22 hours each day. Each individual aligner is worn for two weeks before switching to the next aligner in the series. Most patients will receive between 18 and 30 aligners in total, though the exact number will be determined by your unique needs. Treatments typically last 12 to 18 months for adults, while teenagers may require a few additional months.

What are the benefits of Invisalign?

Invisalign offers a number of distinct advantages over traditional orthodontic options, including:

  • Aesthetic appeal: Many patients do not prefer the look or idea of metal brackets on their teeth. They are nearly impossible to miss, and some patients feel self-conscious of their smile when wearing metal braces. However, with the clear, understated appearance of Invisalign aligners, patients can receive inconspicuous orthodontic treatment.
  • Comfort: Unlike the metal brackets and wire of traditional braces, the smooth plastic surface of Invisalign aligners are comfortable to wear. Many patients who wear metal braces complain of sores, scrapes, and rough patches caused by the metal. Athletes in particular are at risk of injuring their mouths.
  • Less office visits: Since Invisalign patients simply switch to a new series for an adjustment to their braces, there is much less time spent at the dentist’s office. Dr. Rink will schedule checkups every six weeks or so, to monitor your progress or suggest changes to upcoming aligners in your series.
  • Simple and easy: The aligners will not interfere with your ability to eat, brush, or floss. Other than regular cleanings with lukewarm water and a brush, they do not require much maintenance. Most patients can easily add Invisalign treatment to their daily routine.
  • Improved oral health: By straightening your teeth, Invisalign makes it easier for you to clean the hard-to-reach spaces in your teeth. Even the most attentive patients cannot clean areas they cannot reach. With our approach, to provide more access to dental services, we bring Invisalign to Charleston that makes a substantial difference in protecting your oral health.

To Our Wonderful Family of Patients:

Last night, my wife Connie and I enjoyed the most delicious take-out dinner from FIG restaurant. As always, the food was excellent; however, it was most satisfying to see the local restaurant, along with others, begin its comeback. Our resilient city feels like it is coming back to life—parks are opening and folks and families are enjoying the wonderful spring Charleston air. The Rink dental team is, too, readying itself for the next chapter of practicing dentistry as the community begins reopening its doors.

We are concentrating on continuing to advance our rock-solid foundation of state-of-the-art infection control. We were blessed to keep our dedicated and passionate team employed during the crisis, and have devoted the entire month of April to research, systematically developing, purchasing and installing the best additional infection control protocols and equipment available. We are ready. This month we will begin the process of a “soft opening” of our practice. What this means for our patients is a resumption of the same excellent restorative, esthetic, and preventive care in the safest and most secure environment available anywhere.

Additional safety steps will include asking our patients to wait for their appointments in their cars rather than in the reception area. We will ask that you take a moment to fill out a short questionnaire upon your arrival regarding your health and recent travels. We will take everyone’s temperature (including the team) with a forehead scanner as you enter the practice. We will clean and disinfect all touchpoints in the office in between each patient. We have procured the highest quality KN95 masks and face shields for the staff and have carefully researched and purchased the most advanced aerosol containment and purification systems available for the safety of all our patients. These are a few examples of how we have added additional layers of protection for your and our staff’s benefit.

Finally, I wholly understand that each one of you is an individual with specific desires, needs, and comfort levels. I want you to know that we are here to actively listen to you and to create the best environment for your emotional health. Some will be ready sooner than others to receive care again at our office. Let’s keep the lines of communication open and please know that our relationship with you and your family is our highest priority.

We look forward to reuniting with everyone but until that time it is our wish that you enjoy good health, good spirits, and peace.

To your optimal dental health,

- John F. Rink, DDS, AAACD and team
