At Charleston Center for Cosmetic and Restorative Dentistry, LLC, we provide a wide range of treatment options. Dental crowns and porcelain veneers are two of the most popular selections. Made from state-of-the-art porcelain, these restorations offer a natural color and a beautifully lifelike sparkle. Dr. John Rink can explain the differences between veneers vs. crowns at his Charleston, SC office. Both provide dramatic, long-lasting cosmetic results. However, each offers unique functional and practical benefits, as well. Whichever treatment you ultimately choose, Dr. Rink will work painstakingly to ensure a realistic look and your complete satisfaction.
Crowns and veneers can achieve similar effects because they will cover up the surface and structural blemishes. These concerns can include:
Veneers will only cover the front of your teeth. In contrast, crowns will go all the way over your teeth, extending to the gum line. Therefore, these larger restorations may be a more effective way to address extensive damage. Dr. Rink can also use crowns to enhance your molars. Veneers are only appropriate for the teeth that show when you smile.
In most cases, we can use our advanced CEREC® system to provide both same-day crowns and same-day veneers.
Additionally, crowns can perform restorative, as well as cosmetic, functions. For example, if you have severe decay that is too extensive for a filling, a crown can strengthen and repair your tooth. Crowns are also an essential part of root canal therapy. Additionally, they can replace missing teeth by holding up a bridge or topping dental implants.
Before placing crowns or traditional veneers, Dr. Rink will need to reshape your teeth and remove some dental tissue. Through this process, he can create more room for the porcelain and build a strong base for the restoration. Because crowns are larger, he will need to remove more tissue. On the other hand, to place veneers, he will typically need to trim off only a millimeter of enamel. In some cases, he can even provide prep-less veneers, which do not usually require any enamel removal at all. Nevertheless, even if you do need a more extensive preparation process, Dr. Rink’s gentle and precise techniques will result in minimal discomfort.
After reshaping your teeth, Dr. Rink will take digital impressions. In most cases, we can use our advanced CEREC® system to provide both same-day crowns and same-day veneers. The CAD/CAM (computer-aided design and computer-aided manufacturing) technology will use the models of your teeth to carve veneers or crowns from lifelike porcelain. With their natural color and sparkle, your crowns or veneers will blend harmoniously with your smile. They will usually be finished in less than an hour, at which time Dr. Rink can attach them to your teeth.
Placing crowns and veneers takes about the same amount of time. Therefore, the cost of the two treatments is typically comparable. However, insurance will often cover crowns if you need them for restorative purposes. In most cases, your policy will not cover either veneers or crowns if you are seeking treatment purely for aesthetic reasons. Nevertheless, we can help you find affordable financing options to make your dream smile a reality.
Crowns and veneers have a similar lifespan. When you maintain proper dental hygiene, both types of treatments can last ten years or more. Of course, for long-lasting results, it is important to brush and floss daily. You must also visit the dentist regularly for exams and cleanings. This routine care will monitor your restorations. It will also keep the rest of your teeth healthy, protecting the overall look of your beautiful smile.
Both crowns and veneers can be excellent options, depending on your needs and goals for treatment. Contact our office to schedule an appointment with Dr. Rink and to find out which type of treatment may be right for you.
