Porcelain Veneers FAQs

While porcelain veneers are a popular cosmetic option for enhancing your smile, it can be hard to know if they're the right option for you. If you're hesitant about pursuing treatment, Dr. John Rink at the Charleston Center for Cosmetic and Restorative Dentistry in Charleston, NC, can sit down with you to go over any questions or concerns you have.

As Charleston’s first accredited dentist with the American Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry, the doctor will guide you through your questions regarding porcelain veneers. His clinic uses CEREC technology to guide the manufacturing of your prosthetic tooth from a single block of porcelain in a single appointment to create "prep-less veneers." This process is considered one of the most affordable and least intrusive treatment options to correct chipped and damaged teeth. You can look through porcelain veneer FAQs to see what other patients have asked about treatment.

When Are Veneers Recommended?

Dr. Rink may suggest porcelain veneers to correct minor cosmetic issues such as:

  • Chips
  • Discoloration
  • Misalignment
  • Misshapenness
  • Overcrowdedness
  • Gaps between teeth
  • Cracks

Am I a Good Candidate?

If you hope to address only a few teeth, porcelain veneers may be a good option for you. Potential candidates must also be in good oral health, practice thorough oral hygiene, and should have a clear understanding of what the procedure entails. Because grinding your teeth can damage veneers in the long-term, the doctor may recommend alternative options for patients with a history of bruxism. The best way to determine if you are a candidate for the procedure, however, is to meet with Dr. Rink for a consultation.

What Is the Procedure Like?

While traditional veneers require at least two appointments for placement, Dr. Rink is proud to offer prep-less veneers. By using CEREC technology, he can take impressions, create, and place a veneer in just one appointment. If you are receiving multiple veneers, though, he can schedule a second appointment to place your additional restorations. After making sure that the veneer fits comfortably over your tooth, he will bond it to the enamel with a strong dental adhesive.

Do not let minor dental defects hold you back from the benefits of a confident smile.

Will It Hurt?

For most patients, the process of placing veneers is pain-free. In fact, most procedures are completed without the use of a local anesthetic. However, if you have a low pain tolerance, Dr. Rink can use an anesthetic to help you stay comfortable during your appointment.

How Long Do Veneers Last?

A porcelain veneer that is properly cleaned and maintained can last up to 10 years.

How Should I Care for My Veneers?

You should treat your new veneers the same way as your natural teeth. Patients should floss and brush their teeth daily, using non-abrasive toothpaste. Additionally, avoiding foods and beverages that may stain your teeth, like coffee and tea, can preserve the color of your veneers.
