What Are Veneers?

Veneers are very thin porcelain shells attached to the surface of your teeth. Veneers are made of durable material and look just like your natural teeth, only they are brighter, even, and perfectly shaped. Veneers are stain-resistant and generally last for 7-10 years or longer before they need replacing. Each porcelain veneer is custom-made to match the shape of your natural teeth. Veneers create a beautiful smile, upgrading the color, size, and general appearance of your teeth.

How Are Veneers Installed?

The veneers installation procedure is completed in two office visits. Each visit takes about two hours. Your veneers are custom-manufactured to suit the contours of your mouth and shape of your unique smile.

A small amount of enamel is removed from your teeth to prepare them for the veneers to be placed. When the teeth are ready, the veneers will be bonded to your natural teeth with a dental adhesive. The results are instantaneous and dramatic, resulting in a brilliantly white smile.

What Types of Porcelain Dental Veneers Do We Offer?

At the Charleston Center for Cosmetic Dentistry, Dr. Rink offers two different types of veneers: the type that requires tooth preparation and the type that does not. During the private consultation, the patient’s teeth will be assessed to determine which type is best suited to their needs. When conditions allow for it, Dr. Rink prefers to install veneers that do not need any preparation (tooth enamel removal). Enamel removal should be avoided whenever possible, as more natural tooth content makes for a stronger tooth. Porcelain veneers can last for 20 years or longer when bonded to a well-grounded, healthy tooth.

Another benefit of this option is that patients can have their veneers removed without requiring any additional work on the tooth content. With the other method, patients will have to undergo tooth enamel removal. This means that they will have to wear a veneer or another type of restoration for the rest of their lives. It should be noted, however, that some cases will call for this approach. Teeth that sit too far forward or are abnormally large can be addressed by removing some of the tooth. Dr. Rink carefully curates a treatment plan based on his patient’s needs. He will disclose any relevant information to you during the private consultation.

Recovery

Once the veneer treatment is complete, patients can return to work without downtime. Afterward, there is usually minimal discomfort. However, if eight or more veneers were put on your teeth, your gums may be sore. If you choose to have sedation during your procedure, you will need to arrange for someone to drive you home, and you’ll need the rest of the day to recuperate.

Start by eating softer foods for the first few days while you’re getting used to your new bite position. After several weeks, there is no limit on what you’re able to eat. Be sure not to use your teeth to open things or as tools or to chew anything other than food, such as fingernails or pen caps. Otherwise, you may use your new teeth as you normally would.

Dental Veneers in Mt Pleasant Frequently Asked Questions

How long do dental veneers last?

Porcelain veneers can last between 7-10 years, or even longer with proper care. Their longevity depends on factors such as oral hygiene, lifestyle habits, and the type of veneers chosen. With good maintenance, they can even last up to 20 years or more.

Are dental veneers reversible?

No, dental veneers are not reversible. In cases where tooth preparation is required (removal of enamel), the process is permanent. However, in cases where prep-less veneers are used, there’s no irreversible alteration to the natural tooth, and the veneers can be removed if necessary.

Do veneers hurt when they are applied?

Generally, placing veneers does not cause significant pain. A small amount of enamel may be removed to prepare your teeth, but this typically doesn’t result in discomfort. If you choose sedation or have multiple veneers placed, some mild discomfort and gum soreness may occur, but will subside after a few days.

Can I get veneers if I have sensitive teeth?

Yes, you can still get veneers if you have sensitive teeth. However, if you have severe tooth sensitivity, it’s important to discuss this with Dr. Rink during your consultation. The procedure can be modified to minimize any discomfort, and your dentist may recommend treatments to reduce sensitivity before applying the veneers.

Can veneers fix severely misaligned teeth?

Veneers can improve the appearance of slightly misaligned teeth, but they are not a substitute for orthodontic treatment. If your teeth are severely misaligned, it may be necessary to consider Invisalign or other orthodontic options before veneers can be placed.

Are there any food restrictions after getting veneers?

While you can enjoy most foods after getting veneers, it’s advisable to avoid extremely hard or sticky foods, as they could cause the veneers to crack or become dislodged. Additionally, it's best to avoid biting into hard objects with your front teeth, such as ice, pens, or fingernails.

How should I care for my veneers?

Caring for your veneers is simple. Brush and floss your teeth regularly as you would with natural teeth. Avoid smoking or using tobacco products, which can stain your veneers. Visit your dentist regularly for cleanings and checkups to ensure your veneers remain in top condition.

Can veneers be whitened if they get stained?

Veneers themselves are stain-resistant, but if they do become discolored over time, they cannot be whitened like natural teeth. If your veneers begin to stain, Dr. Rink can discuss options for replacing them or enhancing their appearance.

How do I know if I’m a good candidate for veneers?

Good candidates for veneers are patients who have healthy teeth and gums but are looking to address cosmetic issues such as discoloration, uneven teeth, or minor misalignments. Dr. Rink will perform a thorough consultation to determine if veneers are the right option for you.

Are veneers covered by insurance?

Veneers are typically considered a cosmetic procedure and are not usually covered by insurance. However, some dental plans may cover a portion of the cost if the veneers are being used to restore a damaged tooth. Dr. Rink’s office can help you explore your financing options.
