Treatment Steps For Dental Implants
During your initial implant consultation, you will undergo an examination that may include X-rays, panoramic X-rays, and 3-D imaging. Your doctor will also review your dental and medical records, as well as any medications that you are taking. When you are ready for implant placement, your surgeon will make an incision in the gum and surgically embed the implant into the jawbone.
Follow-up appointments will indicate how the implant is healing. Once your surgeon determines that sufficient fusion has occurred, a second surgery will be scheduled to expose the implant from beneath the gums and attach an abutment. Additionally, a temporary crown or other prosthetic will be placed on the abutment while the gum heals around it.
In a few weeks, you will return to have your permanent restoration attached, such as an implant-supported crown, which will complete the treatment. Dental implant treatment does require an investment in time. For the majority of patients, the benefits associated with dental implants far outweigh the time commitment.
