TMJ Treatment

TMJ disorder describes a condition characterized by pain in the jaw, neck, and head. Causes of TMJ include excessive clenching of the jaw, grinding of teeth, stress, and an improper bite. Thousands of Americans suffer from facial pain associated with TMJ. At our Charleston practice, we now offer several treatment options to correct TMJ related disorders, including several non-surgical TMJ treatments. Our Charleston dentist, Dr. John Rink, can create a TMJ treatment plan that includes tooth restoration with dental implants or dentures, and fixed or removable bite splints. When worn, these bite appliances prevent teeth from touching each other, and help to reduce pain in the jaw, neck, and head that is the result of TMJ.

Restoration of Dental Implants

If you are missing teeth but are not an appropriate candidate for porcelain veneers, we also offer dental implants at our Charleston practice. Dental implants are an excellent solution to missing teeth, and can prevent nearby teeth from drifting to an abnormal position. Dental implants eliminate gaps, providing a permanent, natural alternative to dentures. Dr. Rink restores dental implants at his Charleston practice by attaching artificial teeth to implants anchored in the bone below the gum line. After the dental implants have been surgically placed in the jawbone, excess bone and gum grow around the implants, holding them firmly in place. Dr. Rink then attaches artificial teeth, either fixed or removable, to the dental implants at his Charleston office. The end result is strong, secure teeth that are virtually indistinguishable from natural teeth.

Porcelain Inlays and Onlays

Porcelain inlays and onlays (also known as indirect fillings) are designed to fill in cavities and areas of damage in the teeth. Like regular fillings, they protect the teeth from further decay; however, while traditional fillings fit inside a cavity, inlays and onlays are placed on top of the tooth to build up the cusp of the tooth and add strength. While regular fillings are made of a soft material that is fitted inside of the tooth, inlays and onlays are molded from porcelain and cemented in place. Fortunately, Dr. Rink is able to use CEREC 3D technology to mill porcelain inlays and onlays while you wait – the fillings can be fabricated and placed in a single visit. To learn more about porcelain inlays and onlays, or other restorative dentistry procedures, contact Charleston dentist John Rink today.

Composite Fillings

In the past, dentists could only treat cavities and tooth ailments with silver and mercury fillings. Modern restorative dentistry has replaced these unsightly fillings with tooth-colored composite fillings made of porcelain or resin. These fillings are sealed to the surface of the tooth, creating a strong bond that prevents future decay. To find out if you are one of the many candidates for composite fillings in Charleston, Hilton Head, or Myrtle Beach, contact our restorative dentistry practice.

Bridgework

If you have gaps in your smile and find it difficult to speak and chew, dental bridges may be the right option for you. Bridges work by closing spaces in your mouth and filling gaps with long-lasting artificial teeth. Dental bridges are semi-permanent—they can only be removed by a dentist—and are comfortable and proven to strengthen teeth. Dental bridges can also be attached to dental implants at our Charleston office for a more permanent solution for missing teeth. To find out if you are one of the many candidates for dental bridges in Charleston, Hilton Head, and Myrtle Beach, contact the Charleston Center for Cosmetic & Restorative Dentistry today.

Partial Dentures

To maintain a healthy smile, it is important to replace missing teeth in order to prevent shifting and damage to mouth tissue, and to reduce pain associated with TMJ disorders. At our Charleston practice, we use partial or removable dentures to fill gaps left by missing teeth. Partial dentures consist of artificial teeth attached to a plastic base, and when properly fitted, these dentures are indistinguishable from natural teeth. To find out more about partial dentures and how they provide Charleston, Hilton Head, and Myrtle Beach patients withTMJ treatment, contact our Charleston dentist today.

CEREC 3D

Thousands of patients are now choosing the CEREC 3D system for advanced dental care in a single office visit. CEREC 3D is currently the only system available world-wide that allows dentists to fabricate and place permanent dental restorations (dental crowns, porcelain veneers , porcelain inlays/onlays) in a single appointment. For patients at our restorative dentistry practice from Charleston, Hilton Head, and Myrtle Beach, this means less time spent in the dentist’s chair, less drilling, and no second appointment required.

If you are interested in a CEREC restoration, it is important to choose a dentist with experience using CEREC 3D technology. Dr. Rink is currently on faculty at the Medical University of South Carolina's (MUSC) Dental School teaching the CEREC CAD/CAM course. He has placed numerous CEREC 3D restorations at his Charleston practice and welcomes the opportunity to introduce the technology to new patients from Hilton Head and Myrtle Beach as well.

Dental Restorations in a Single Appointment

At most dental offices, restorative dentistry treatments require multiple visits. During the first appointment, the dentist usually takes impressions of the teeth and applies a temporary restoration. A few weeks later, the patient returns for a second appointment where the temporary is removed and the permanent inlays, dental crowns, or porcelain veneers are placed. Ever since Dr. Rink introduced new CEREC 3D technology at his restorative dentistry practice in Charleston , a dental restoration can be completed – start to finish – in just a single appointment! This is highly beneficial for the patients that visit our office from Hilton Head, Myrtle Beach, and throughout the state.

Quality Dental Materials

In the past, dentists used amalgam, gold, and other metals to repair and restore damaged teeth. Unfortunately, these materials had a tendency to break and often did not provide adequate support to the teeth. With CEREC 3D technology, Dr. Rink can create durable tooth-colored ceramic restorations in a single appointment that are not only more attractive than metal restorations, but infinitely more healthy. Because these ceramic restorations are chemically bonded to the teeth, Dr. Rink can apply the restorations without having to sacrifice healthy teeth tissue. The result is an attractive, strong restoration that resists cracking and will protect the teeth from further damage.

Smile Enhancement

Dr. Rink can use CEREC 3D to create any single tooth restoration. If your teeth are stained, chipped, or cracked, Dr. Rink can create a single dental veneer to repair and restore your smile. CEREC 3D also allows Dr. Rink to create single dental crowns to cover damaged teeth or to utilize as a dental implant restoration for the permanent replacement of missing teeth.
