DR. JOHN F. RINK: Periodontal disease is a disease of the structures that support the teeth, mainly the gums and the bone. Bacteria normally grow at the junction of the tooth and the gum and as these colonies are allowed to mature, they migrate between the tooth and the gum and infect the jaw bone. Once an infection sets into the jaw bone, the advancement of the disease usually occurs. So from a dental point of view we are very concerned about controlling periodontal disease, but what is really interesting though is that there is a link between periodontal disease and overall health. We now know that periodontal disease is associated with cardiovascular disease and sclerosis of the arteries and it has also been implicated in creating complications during pregnancy. So periodontal disease is a very important dental health issue that has significant ramifications, so one of the things we like to focus on in our practice is does the patient have periodontal disease and how do we control it?
