DR. JOHN F. RINK: One of my favorite procedures to do in dentistry is a denture. Dentures are exciting to me personally because they are the most challenging restoration in dentistry. Not only has the patient lost the function of their teeth, they have lost all of their teeth. That means to the restorative dentist all of the landmarks are gone. So what we have to do is we have to select teeth that are the proper size and shape and then position them back into the patients mouth in such a way that it looks natural, feels natural, the patient is able to speak, and with accomplishing these steps successfully we can then determine if that patient is going to be happy with dentures or not. Many times patients can be made to be happy with dentures, but for those who feel like there is not enough security in that denture or they might like to have a more stable bite. At that point, then we may opt to add some dental implants to further stabilize their chewing ability.
