DR. JOHN F. RINK: Replacing missing teeth in dentistry is taking new steps in the present time and what we are doing now to replace missing teeth is the placement of dental implants. Dental implants are synthetic root forms that are placed in a patients bone and gum onto which a replacement tooth is placed. This technique is very successful with good long term results and when placed carefully be experienced surgeons and experienced restorative dentists, even in the upper front and lower front part of the mouth, many times implants can be placed imperceptibly. One of the beautiful things of dental implants is that we can restore a patient’s teeth back to their natural strength and with this restoration back to their natural strength their bite becomes very similar to what it was before they lost their teeth in the first place. So a patient can then enjoy the possibility of eating an apple, or corn on the cob, or other foods that require some work to chew very comfortably.
