Nitrous oxide is a fast-acting method of sedation that helps patients feel at ease during dental procedures. Nitrous oxide is easily administered using a nasal mask and patients will be in a "twilight sleep" during their procedure. Dr. John Rink offers nitrous oxide sedation to help several types of patients at our Charleston, SC, office, including patients who have dental phobia or patients who will be undergoing extensive or multiple procedures. This sedation method allows our patients to undergo the comfortable, stress-free treatments that they may desperately need.
Nitrous oxide, more commonly known as laughing gas, is an inhaled sedative. It is widely used and is a highly effective form of light sedation. During treatment, you may feel lightheaded and relaxed, but you will remain conscious and aware of your surroundings. This allows you to answer questions from Dr. Rink and our staff, and to perform any necessary actions you are asked to complete.
Inhaled sedation can benefit a wide range of patients and it is even safe for use on children. Nitrous oxide is frequently used to help patients overcome dental fears. We can use this sedation method for routine procedures such as cleanings and exams, as well as more complex procedures such as the placement of a dental crown. Even patients who do not have dental fears can benefit from inhaled sedation during lengthy procedures.
Nitrous oxide, more commonly known as laughing gas, is an inhaled sedative. It is widely used and is a highly effective form of light sedation.
Nitrous oxide can ensure a more comfortable appointment for patients with disabilities or those with painful medical conditions such as arthritis. It is also a good alternative for patients who are allergic to certain medications and cannot use oral conscious sedation.
Because nitrous oxide is an inhaled sedation, it is administered through a small mask. Dr. Rink will place this mask comfortably over your nose prior to treatment. He has full control of the sedation levels, which also allows him to adjust the flow of nitrous oxide as needed throughout the treatment. It also makes it a safer sedation choice than other options.
Nitrous oxide is easily administered and completely safe. Unlike oral conscious sedation, which relies on the patient taking the appropriate dose of sedatives, the effects of nitrous oxide are entirely in Dr. Rink's hands. This ensures a maximum level of comfort without any potential dangers of overdose.
Other methods of sedation can often have negative side effects. Nitrous oxide, however, takes effect quickly and wears off just as quickly. Additionally, because nitrous oxide typically wears off within five to 10 minutes, you can drive yourself home after your procedure. Other forms of sedation can take a couple hours or more to wear off, making it unsafe for you to drive yourself home.
Dr. Rink is attentive to the needs of his patients and offers nitrous oxide so that all patients can experience a comfortable and stress-free treatment experience.
