Dr. John F. Rink is a leading dentist serving the greater Charleston area. His commitment to patient care and advanced dental technology are what helps set his practice apart from other practices in the area.
CEREC® same-day dental restoration technology is one of the many reasons that Dr. Rink is so highly regarded by patients and colleagues. Let's see what CEREC® is and why CEREC® dental crowns offer a whole host of advantages to patients.
Before we can discuss the benefits of same-day crowns, it's important to go over the traditional method of crafting dental crowns.
In the past, creating a dental crown and having it placed required two separate dental visits and up to two weeks. The tooth was prepped for the crown first, then an impression was taken of the prepped tooth. This impression was sent to an off-site dental lab to be crafted, during which time the patient would wear temporary crowns. The dental lab then sent the crown back to the practice for the dentist to affix in place.
Thankfully there's a better way of doing this.
With CEREC® technology, the dental lab is now effectively located at the office. The CEREC® machine is its own dedicated on-site dental mill and lab. Dentists prep the tooth as they normally would, and then take a digital impression of the tooth. Using an advanced computer system, a custom crown can be devised and adjusted.
This information is then sent to the CEREC® milling unit, which creates the crown there at the practice using a block of dental porcelain. Once the milling unit is done, the custom crown can then be fixed in place to cap a patient's tooth.
As you can imagine, there are plenty of benefits to the use of CEREC® technology.
The single block of porcelain closely resembles a person's natural tooth structure, which means patients can laugh, smile, and speak without anyone knowing that they have a dental crown in place.
The CEREC® restorations are not just great looking, they are also very durable. Patients can eat their favorite foods without worries of chipping or cracking. They CEREC® porcelain is tough like natural tooth structure.
Rather than two visits, patients can get a tooth prepped and scanned and their crown created and placed in just a few hours. This means that there's less time needed to take off work and fewer trips to the dentist as well. Those temporary crowns won't be necessary either.
Dentists also benefit from using CEREC® restorations. They free up more time for a dentist since multiple visits with one patient are not necessary. The CEREC® restorations also increase patient satisfaction, and having happy patients with great smiles is what the field of dentistry is all about.
