What are Veneers?

Veneers are very thin porcelain shells attached to the surface of your teeth. Veneers are made of durable material and look just like your natural teeth, only they are brighter, even, and perfectly shaped. Veneers are stain-resistant and generally last for 7-10 years or longer before they need replacing. Each porcelain veneer is custom-made to match the shape of your natural teeth. Veneers create a beautiful smile, upgrading the color, size and general appearance of your teeth.

Who is a Candidate for Veneers?

Patients who are looking to resolve a number of dental problems and cosmetic issues are generally candidates for veneers. Porcelain veneers can be used to address the following concerns:

  • Discoloration
  • Short teeth
  • Uneven teeth
  • Chips, breaks and wear and tear
  • Worn down enamel

How are Veneers Installed?

The veneers installation procedure is completed in two office visits. Each visit takes about two hours. Your veneers are custom manufactured to suit the contours of your mouth and shape of your unique smile.

A small amount of enamel is removed from your teeth to prepare them for the veneers to be placed. When the teeth are ready, the veneers will be bonded to your natural teeth with a dental adhesive. The results are instantaneous and dramatic, resulting in a brilliantly white smile.

What Types of Porcelain Dental Veneers Do We Offer?

At the Charleston Center for Cosmetic Dentistry, Dr. Rink offers two different types of veneers: the type that requires tooth preparation and the type that does not. During the private consultation, the patient’s teeth will be assessed to determine which type is best suited to their needs.

When conditions allow for it, Dr. Rink prefers to install veneers that do not need any preparation (tooth enamel removal). Enamel removal should be avoided whenever possible, as more natural tooth content makes for a stronger tooth. Porcelain veneers can last for 20 years or longer when bonded to a well-grounded, healthy tooth. Another benefit of this option is that patients can have their veneers removed without requiring any additional work on the tooth content.

With the other method, patients will have to undergo tooth enamel removal. This means that they will have to wear a veneer or another type of restoration for the rest of their lives. It should be noted, however, that some cases will call for this approach. Teeth that sit too far forward or are abnormally large can be addressed by removing some of the tooth.

Dr. Rink carefully curates a treatment plan based on his patient’s needs. He will disclose any relevant information to you during the private consultation.

Recovery

Once the veneer treatment is complete, patients can return to work without downtime. Afterward there is usually minimal discomfort. However, if eight or more veneers were put on your teeth, your gums may be sore. If you chose to have sedation during your procedure, you will need to arrange for someone to drive you home, and you’ll need the rest of the day to recuperate.

Start by eating softer foods for the first few days while you’re getting used to your new bite position. After several weeks, there is no limit on what you’re able to eat. Be sure not to use your teeth to open things or as tools or to chew anything other than food, such as fingernails or pen caps. Otherwise, you may use your new teeth as you normally would.

Keeping your Veneers in Good Shape

Dr. Rink provides tips for his patients to help keep their veneers in good shape and last for as long as possible:

  • Brush and floss your teeth daily
  • Avoid smoking and tobacco products of any kind
  • Rinse your mouth after drinking soda, wine, or other dark-colored beverages
  • Wear a mouthguard at night if you grind your teeth
  • See your dentist for a professional cleaning every six months
  • Have a yearly dental exam
